What We're Looking ForAt Male Contraceptive Initiative (MCI), we fund research and development that accelerates the creation of safe, effective, and reversible non-hormonal contraceptive methods for people who produce sperm. Our goal is to expand the method mix, increase contraceptive equity, and ultimately change the way reproductive responsibility is shared. But what does that mean for people who apply for funding from MCI? We support a wide range of research, from early discovery to IND-enabling studies, and in select cases, early clinical work. We fund both academic labs and private-sector companies, and we take an active interest in helping projects succeed not just technically, but strategically. That means we look for more than good science; we look for work that can translate into real products. We prioritize approaches that are clearly aligned with our mission: non-hormonal mechanisms, reversible approaches, and methods that could realistically meet the needs of users around the world. We're especially interested in mechanisms that are sperm-specific, tissue-selective, or otherwise uniquely suited to male physiology. Validated contraceptive targets or clear biomarkers of efficacy are a plus. If it addresses persistent gaps in the pipeline like method reversibility, onset time, or formulation, it’s even better. Strong applications are also those that present a coherent development plan. Applicants don’t need to have every step mapped out from here to market, but you should be able to show how your work moves the field, and your project forward. That includes clear aims, appropriate milestones, and a sense of what success looks like, not just scientifically, but from a product perspective. Importantly, we look for collaboration. We see ourselves as more than a funder, we’re a partner. Our most successful grantees are those who communicate openly, take feedback seriously, and are willing to engage with the broader male contraception ecosystem. Whether you’re submitting from a university or a startup, your team’s ability to connect scientific ambition with translational awareness is key. It’s also true that we decline many otherwise strong applications. Sometimes the work is excellent but too tangential to contraception. Other times, promising ideas lack a clear development trajectory or haven’t yet hit a level that demonstrates feasibility. If you’re unsure whether your work is a fit, we encourage you to reach out before applying. We’re happy to provide guidance. MCI exists to fund bold, practical science that brings new male methods closer to reality. If that sounds like your work, we’d love to hear from you. What Makes it Through Successful applications often share common characteristics that set them apart. Here are some insights into what typically makes an application stand out and ultimately receive funding from MCI.
Alignment with MCI's Priorities: Applicants who thoroughly research MCI's current funding priorities and tailor their applications to demonstrate a strong alignment with these areas increase their chances of success. Clear Evaluation Plan: Projects that include a robust plan for evaluating their progress and impact are more likely to be funded. This demonstrates a commitment to accountability and continuous improvement. Strong Proposal Narrative: Applications that tell a compelling story about their project, its potential, and the team behind it tend to resonate more. A clear, concise, and engaging narrative helps reviewers understand the vision and passion driving the project. Experienced and Capable Team: The expertise and track record of the project team play a significant role. Highlighting relevant experience, qualifications, and a clear division of responsibilities can instill confidence in the project's ability to achieve its goals. How to Apply: A Guide for ApplicantsStart by reading our current funding opportunities. We periodically post RFAs (Requests for Applications) and other funding opportunities that outline priority areas, eligibility criteria, and application deadlines. If you’re unsure whether your work fits, contact us. We’re happy to have a conversation and guide you to the appropriate opportunity. When you prepare your application, focus on clarity and coherence. Define your objectives, describe your methods, and show how the work will be evaluated. Don’t hesitate to contextualize your work within the broader field of male contraception. If you know of related efforts or competing approaches, say so. We value applicants who are aware of the landscape and can articulate how their work adds value. Most of all, remember that we’re looking for more than promising science—we’re looking for promising solutions. Our job is to help move them forward. If yours is ready for that next step, we want to know about it.
