Male Contraceptive Initiative advocates for the research and development of new methods of male birth control.
To bridge the gap between demand and funding, we’re working to educate and engage the public. We collect and share people’s perspectives on male birth control and create accessible educational materials that explain the science behind male contraception and its potential impact on society.
These materials are distributed through a robust collection of resources:
In our advocacy work at MCI, we support informed conversations and work to broaden awareness of male contraception. We’ve developed a series of advocacy one-pagers tailored to specific audiences to provide concise, accessible information about male contraceptive research and development, the state of the field, and the potential impact of expending contraceptives for men.
Whether you’re seeking to fund research, shape policy, or simply learn more, these one-pagers are designed to help you engage with the topic in a meaningful and impactful way. Click on the banners below to view the full content.
A Gendered Burden: The Need for Male Birth Control
The widespread availability of female birth control methods, including pills, IUDs, patches, and injectables, has created a skewed perception that birth control is primarily a woman’s responsibility.
This gendered burden has contributed to a lack of investment in male birth control research and development. Despite the misconception that men are uninterested in birth control, studies consistently show significant demand for effective and convenient options.
Male Contraceptive Initiative’s research indicates that at least 17 million men in the United States alone are seeking alternatives to condoms and vasectomy. It’s time to address this imbalance and provide men with the same range of birth control choices available to women.
MCI’s Male Contraception Myth Busting
What are MCI's advocacy efforts to support male birth control?
It will take more than just great science to get new male birth control methods to market. We created this section to highlight some of the larger advocacy and outreach efforts we invest in and conduct in order to illustrate the demand for, and potential impact of, male birth control.
Working to understand needs and perceptions to develop a menu of male contraceptives that meets everyone’s needs.
Working to understand attitudes, needs and motivations regarding the future of male birth control.
Supporting men and women preventing pregnancy as a unit.
Facilitating a commercial pathway for male contraception driven by collaboration, transparency, and the public good.
Fostering a community of practice that brings together expertise from across the spectrum to get male birth control to market faster.
Producing an engaging audio experience featuring subject matter experts and everyday people investigating the past, present, and future of male birth control.
Creating an educational platform that provides people with the foundational understanding of male reproductive biology and contraception.
Developing a database of potential targets that illustrates the breadth of male contraception research and development.
Designing a system of tools that facilitate creative brainstorming while developing a sense of shared empathy.
Sharing an inclusive understanding of the needs of traditionally underserved communities.
Making a clear connection between male contraception and the world’s most pressing challenges.
Creating a multimedia learning journey that facilitates a holistic understanding of male contraception.
